Sandra (Sandy)'s Story
Life
After Tilden, I attended Brooklyn College, where I met my husband Bob Andina (Van Buren '67)--we married in 1971 just after graduation. Lived in Seattle, '71-78 where Bob got his PhD and MD degrees from the Univ. of Wash. and I got my JD from the Univ. of Puget Sound School of Law (now Seattle U. School of Law, for which I'm Midwest Alumni rep). Been here in Chicago since 1978, when Bob matched at the UIC for his Internal Med. residency. Still married; have a son Gordy--a graduate of Columbia College Chicago, Second City Actors' Conservatory & Writers' Workshop, I. O. and Piven Theater Workshop's Young People's Company (and one heck of a comic actor & writer). He has his own improv troupe and was Head Writer for the pioneering Chicago weekly topical satirical revue "That Just Happened." This June marks our 47th anniversary.
I recently retired from private law practice (except to perform in the Chicago Bar Assn.'s annual show--15 yrs. and counting), but I'm mostly a singer-songwriter/comedian performing solo and with the Madison, WI-based touring acoustic eclectic Americana/humor duo Andina & Rich. (Also teach songwriting, beginning guitar and mountain dulcimer). In 2013 I was named Songwriter of the Year by international songwriting organization Songsalive! (I was also the bassist for the Chicago rock bands The White Women and Lake Effect, as well as Emanuel Congregationâs Ham-It-Up klezmer band).
My first CD, "Ghosts and Angels," as well as my bands' CDs, are available for purchase or download at the usual online sources (which Classmates won't let me mention) and get airplay on internet and FM stations all over the US (especially college & NPR stations) and even internationally. Andina & Rich released our second studio CD, "Two Guitars, a Dulcimer and an Attitude" in 2010. All 14 cuts have gotten airplay. In Dec. 2014 we released our first Holiday EP '"Merry Humbug;" and our next CD "Chasing Lightning" will be released for Christmas 2018. I was active in the international Folk Alliance (Midwest Region, aka FARM, past President and Registrar), and am in the Chicago Songwriters' Collective and both the Chicago locals and Local 1000 of the American Federation of Musicians.
We're a multi-religion, multi-regional household: New Yorkers Bob & I, and our native Midwesterner son Gordy. Currently owned by two cats. We live in a big old (1...Expand for more
00+ years) American Foursquare near Chicago's lakefront, and are learning home repair and maintenance as we go. Gonna be tough to downsize when the time comes. Can't imagine living anywhere but a big city!
Politics used to be a participatory sport for me (in Seattle I was a Dem. Precinct Committeewoman and WA State Convention Delegate, mayoral campaign co-chair and Democratic district VP; in Chicago, a Dem Precinct capt. and Area Coordinator for successful Congressional campaigns) but I still avidly follow it (as anyone who's read my FB page can attest). My political philosophy? Rebuild Main St. and rein in Wall St. I rejoice that the ACA has taken effect--and despite various attempts, continues in force.
Off my soapbox for now, back to the mic stand. I love more than anything (except my family and friends) to make music and entertain--the greatest compliment I can think of after a show is "I enjoyed that," "I'm so glad I came," or "You really touched me (and made me laugh/cry/think)." I and we do house concerts, so if you'd like to have us or me entertain you and your friends, please do send me a message and we'll fit you into our tours.
